Dear Friends,

When ALS hits a family the focus turns to provision of care, equipment and emotional support to the person living with ALS and to the family and caregivers.  We are motivated more than ever to work hard to ensure there is support for caregivers and people living with ALS.  That is why we would like to invite you to our 2nd Annual ALS Golf Tournament of Hope that will take place on September 17, 2010 at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops, BC.

This tournament came about from an amazing person I was honoured to call a friend, Clayton Smailes, who lost his battle with ALS on July 23, 2009 - 6 years after his diagnosis when he was just 31.  Clayton's dream was to bring awareness to people about this horrific disease.  This disease also took my amazing Father Giovanni (John) Caferra in October of 2005.  His battle was quite a bit shorter.  My Father died from ALS December 26, 2006.   He too wanted the awareness of ALS to be brought forward and the continuation of research as he stated once that he never wanted to see another family experience the effects of ALS.

This tournament is becoming a major fundraiser for the ALS Society of BC.  Proceeds from the tournament will go in part (30%) towards the creation of an Endowment Fund to support the development of communications technology for ALS and 70% towards patient services which includes equipment loan and transportation programs through the ALS Society to provide the best quality of life possible living with ALS.

A COMMENT FROM CLAYTON:

"Awareness of this disease needs to be promoted and research continued - a cure is there somewhere............it just needs to be found."

We hope you can join us on September 17th .  Your help will  provide more hope.  Thank you.

Sincerely

 Gina Valachy, Tournament Committee Chairperson
