Volunteer of the Year Award
ALS Society of B.C. Roy Slater Annual Award for Volunteer of the Year
Arthur Roy Slater was the president of the ALS Society of BC for 9 years and the President of ALS Canada for 2 years. Roy passed away from ALS after a 12-year battle in August 1993 at the age of 67 years. He was married to his loving wife Wendy for 47 years. Roy and Wendy were dedicated to assisting others with ALS and volunteered endless hours on behalf of the provincial and national society.
Founding director Kate Hall, remembers Roy as being a very wonderful person who was extremely dedicated to the cause. Volunteerism is the willingness of people to work on behalf of others without the expectation of pay or other tangible gain. The ALS Society of B.C. is a volunteer-driven organization, and without volunteers the Society would not be able to function in the capacity that it does. Volunteers do anything from helping with envelope stuffing, leading a support group, to organizing a fundraising event. Regardless of the task, each volunteer is invaluable to those living with ALS. Volunteers enable the Society to continue to provide patient services and equipment, and the impact is profound as it helps someone who is living with ALS to maintain a better quality of life.
The Annual ALS Society of B.C. Roy Slater Volunteer of the Year Award honours those who volunteer for the ALS Society of BC to provide support to ALS patients, their families and caregivers.
